Sand Filter Troubleshooting Guide
Sand filters are reliable and easy to maintain, but over time you may notice pressure issues, cloudy water, or reduced performance. This guide walks you through the most common problems and how to fix them step by step.
How a Sand Filter Should Work
Water flows through sand inside the tank, trapping debris before returning clean water to your pool. As debris builds up, pressure increases and the filter must be backwashed.
Problem: High Pressure
What it means: The filter is dirty and restricting water flow.
How to Fix It
- Turn off the pump
- Set valve to Backwash
- Run pump for 2–3 minutes (until water runs clear)
- Turn off pump
- Set valve to Rinse (30–60 seconds)
- Return valve to Filter
- Restart system
If pressure is still high:
- Sand may be dirty or compacted
- Deep clean or replace sand
Problem: Low Pressure or Weak Flow
What it means: Water is not reaching the filter properly.
How to Fix It
- Check skimmer basket and pump basket for debris
- Make sure valves are fully open
- Check for air leaks in pump lid or hoses
- Verify water level is mid-skimmer
Problem: Sand Blowing Into Pool
What it means: Internal filter parts are damaged.
How to Fix It
- Turn off system
- Open filter tank
- Inspect laterals (internal arms)
- Replace broken laterals
Problem: Cloudy Pool Water
What it means: The filter is not removing fine debris effectively.
How to Fix It
- Run filter longer (8–12 hours daily)
- Backwash filter
- Check water chemistry
- Replace sand if older than 3–5 years
When to Replace Sand
- Water stays cloudy despite proper care
- Frequent backwashing is needed
- Sand is clumped or greasy
Common Questions
- Why is my sand filter pressure high?
- Why is sand going into my pool?
- How often should I backwash?
- How long does sand last?
