How to Fix Air in Your Pool Pump
If you notice air bubbles in your pump basket or returning through your pool jets, it usually means air is entering your system somewhere. This can reduce circulation and make your pump less efficient.
The good news is that most air issues can be identified and resolved with a few simple checks.
Common Signs of Air in Your Pump:
- Visible air bubbles in the pump basket
- Bubbles coming from return jets
- Low or inconsistent water flow
- Pump losing prime
Step-by-Step: How to Fix Air in Your Pump
1. Check Your Pool Water Level
If the water level is too low, your skimmer can pull in air instead of water.
- Water should be about halfway up the skimmer opening
- Add water if needed before running the pump
2. Inspect the Pump Lid and O-Ring
A loose or worn pump lid O-ring can allow air to enter the system.
- Make sure the lid is tightened securely
- Inspect the O-ring for cracks or dryness
- Clean and lightly lubricate the O-ring if needed
3. Check Pump and Skimmer Baskets
Clogged baskets can restrict water flow and cause air to enter the system.
- Turn off the pump
- Remove and clean both baskets
- Reinstall securely before restarting
4. Inspect Suction Side Connections
Air leaks typically occur on the suction side (before the pump).
- Check hoses or PVC connections for cracks
- Tighten any loose fittings
- Look for worn seals or valves
5. Re-Prime the Pump
If your pump has lost prime, it may continue to pull air until it is properly reset.
- Turn off the pump
- Remove the pump lid
- Fill the pump basket with water
- Replace lid securely
- Restart the pump
When to Look Further
If air continues after these steps, there may be a more involved issue such as:
- Underground suction line leak
- Damaged valves
- Worn pump components
In these cases, additional inspection or professional service may be needed.
